Change is hard but apparent; why resist it?
Change is all around; even the seasons are evidence of continuous change. Some change is immediately good and welcomed, like the first fall breeze after the sweltering summer days in the southeast. But another change is hesitant, unsure, and scary.
Especially when change is uncomfortable, challenging, or unexpected, we typically resist this type of change, and why wouldn’t we? It is hard.
Change asks a lot from us.
But like many challenging circumstances, those hard things are part of our growth, our change for good, sanctifying change, and change pushing us to be more like Jesus—good, hard, challenging change.
Our resistance to change stems from our human nature, which is far from perfect. However, in stark contrast to us, our savior is a constant in our lives who never changes. His unwavering, unchanging character is a rock we can rest on when going through a season of change.
How?
- By welcoming the new interactions while being uncomfortable. We cannot change for our good and His good by staying within our comfortable bubble. Consider what is being asked of you and call on God for strength and reassurance throughout the challenging change.
- Change can be complicated. New habits are being created while old, instilled habitual habits are being broken, which is no easy feat; by nature, we are creatures of habit. When moving forward with healthy change, breaking up with bad habits takes time. Even if we slip up, keep going, small daily habits will snowball into healthy new habits.
- Pray; the power of prayer is real. Prayer can feel uncomfortable at first or even awkward. Still, our Creator knows our hearts, and communicating with Him through prayer becomes increasingly effortless, just like new habits are instilled the more we do it. If praying is difficult, try writing it down; a prayer is a prayer regardless of the delivery form.
Our takeaway is that change is hard, but we are capable. Lean into the change; Jesus is with you every step of the way. Welcome it, be consistent, don’t fear failure, and lean into the opportunity to grow closer to God. He is the only One who will never change. What a beautiful picture of an ever-consistent God in a world of ever-changing circumstances. Change is a challenge, but you have the biggest cheerleader in Jesus.
All in love,
Nichole
